...in which jay has an extremely rare fan-gasm (complete with a dose of healthy skepticism) over the celluloidation of his favoritest book...
Weekend wrap coming up soon. Still decompressing from an insane drive home followed immediately by a Monday.

Ack! I acually went Black Friday shopping. Eeeeww.
Well, we went with my mom to the Vanity Fair outlet. All things considered, it was not that crowded and I left with 2 mocks, 3 oxfords, 2 pairs of jeans, a book for Linda, and a six-pack of socks. Mom surprised me with buying the jeans as a holiday gift but I still only dropped 3 twenties on the bundle.
And that was/will be the extent of my retail holiday-season shopping experience.
For those of you who missed it on facebook and myspace...

She ain't the Dragon Wagon, but she's fun. 2 miles on the odometer and 5 days in my hands! Always good to sweet-talk into free upgrades at pickup.
Makes me want a new car.
EDIT * And da boss is shipping us out an hour early today!
things that just bother me
...and now your daily dose of spite and ire...
- I could care less whether Ellen was gay, straight, or bi, she's just not fucking funny. At all. She needs to go away now.
- Xenophobic country music. Fuck you, Toby Keith.
- People in sports cars who swing a wide left before making a right turn. I can corner better in my station wagon, asshole.
- Christmas bullshit being crammed down our throats before Thanksgiving. Seriously, what other holiday demands over a month of blatant commercialism and then people have the fucking nerve to bitch about others saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"? Does Christianity have both that much of a superiority complex and that big of an insecurity paranoia?
Okay. Got that out of my system.
maybe it's just me
Has anyone else noticed a sudden increase in mainstream media reporting UFO stories and news?
I always hated History...

You can be hot or sweet, it just depends on your mood that day. Sometimes people overlook you and don't give you enough credit for who you are. They try to take advantage of you often, but you aren't one to just sit back and let it happen. When you've had enough you definitely let them know.
You can be a bit moody and have definitive up and down times. It makes being with you a challenge at times, but you have so much personality that being your friend is very much worth the challenge.
You can be very popular, and you don't mind being so. You are more a leader than a follower. You have a wide range of interests and abilities. In your opinion life is too short so you should do as much as you can during your lifetime.
You have your own flair and style, but you still look to see what it trendy.
Been a while since I've actually posted anything of substance, so here ya go! The last few weeks have been a bit busy but overall quite good.

A couple of weeks ago, my folks came up for their first visit. I was finishing up the late shift - this week was my first back on the 9-5 - and I met them at the hotel right after work. They were just entering New Hampshire when I was pulling into the hotel lot, so I was able to talk them through the last leg of the trip. After they were settled into their room, we hopped in the car and headed to our place to give 'em the tour and meet linda_a. We went out for dinner at Yangtzee, a nice Mandarin restaurant we hadn't checked out ourselves yet.
It was a rainy, foggy day, but Mom and Dad were up for a trip to the White Mountains. On our way to the peaks, we stopped at Kokopelli, a southwestern shop on Route 16, where we spent a good bit of time and were happy that my parents enjoyed a taste of their favorite part of the country in our northeastern corner. While the mountains were mostly obscured by the clouds, we did have a great time chatting along the trip, sharing stories, and playing tour guides. On the way home, hunger began to set in and we hit Asia for dinner (notice a theme here?).
After dinner, and before stopping back at our place, we drove an extra few blocks to go across the bridge to Maine, so Mom could say that she'd been there. Since Berwick, ME is right next to Somersworth, it was a quick trip. At the house, we settled in for a few minutes and gave Mom her holiday present, a handmade turquoise necklace, bracelet, and earring set I spotted at the Holistic Expo last month.
On Sunday morning, we met at the hotel for breakfast before seeing them off. It was a fast trip but a good "trial run" as Dad said. I'm looking forward to a longer visit with them this coming weekend when Linda and I head home for Thanksgiving.

The Dragon Wagon had been having some coolant system woes, so she was taken to the shop last weekend for an oil change, coolant system flush, air filter, and a good lookover before winter. Knowing there was a coolant leak somewhere, I knew she needed something replaced. That something, I never expected, was the whole damned radiator. Oh well, it was a necessary fix and we spent the afternoon in the waiting room, as it was again, a miserable, rainy weekend.
She's been great since, minus a lack of hot air to the cabin a couple of times, but I've chalked that up to the coolant system work; air in the lines, old gunk getting loosened up and flushed, etc. If it crops up again, I'll have the thermostat and heater core looked at, but she's been a champ with the hot air in these last cold few days.

Today's been pleasant. Linda and I slept in a bit and she pleasantly woke me up with making some fresh coffee. After we puttered about a bit and let the caffeine settle in, we headed into Dover and hit the bookstore. I spied some tempting vinyl selections but resisted the urge, settling on a smaller purchase: the 60th Anniversary/700th issue of Fate. Then we drove down to Newington for some light shopping and a stop at Red Hook Brewery for dinner.
Now we're sitting in the living room with a fire, some good beer (Chimay Red and Blue, and Hennepin), and craft projects. Linda's been working on some incredible miniatures (she's laying heardwood floors and using stucco and upholstering and everything!) and I'm charring the edges of paper for a plaque project I've been devising.

I wasn't going to post much on the election. I'm actually quite tired of hearing about it... and was quite tired of hearing about it roughly a few months ago. Honestly, if nothing else, I was proud of America for the record turnout, for electing a black man president, for having a woman VP candidate, for being conscientious and giving a damn, regardless of affiliation or preference.
Today, there are celebrations and happiness, lamentations and fears. While pride is deserved, gloating is arrogant, and disappointment is normal, but doomsaying is extremist. Whatever side of the emotional spectrum you feel today, I respect you, because if I've learned nothing else about people in these last few days, it's that you give a damn. Our beliefs and philosophies may differ, but the fact that we care about them so intensely proves that we all want to better this country in our own eyes, and for that, whether I agree with your version of betterment or not, I laud you.
Obama and McCain have both emphasized behaving in a more united way. We cannot change the results, only where we go from here.
That said, I'll share something I wrote in response to one of linda_a's posts:
When Clinton went into office, I knew people who said our country was dead, on the fast road to hell, and all that. When Bush went into office, I knew people who said our country was dead, on the fast road to hell, and all that.
Having lived through both administrations, I can see it's all hype. Scary hype, sometimes, but hype nonetheless. And yes, there are people and movements who do completely frighten me. But through it all, my general life has largely remained unchanged by political power shifts. I still scrape by, enjoy my time outside of work the best I can, and share it all with the people I love.
Sure, I might be threatened with more or less taxes, afraid of losing more or less privacy, but martial law has never been declared, and a recession won't hit my wallet hard enough to make it hurt more than it does (it's like my first car... what damage can be done that isn't already there and worse? :P).
I would love to see some major changes, but nothing that I haven't loved to have seen for years and in some ways we've made some significant progress. I like to focus on that.
But at the end of the day, we have each other, we have our modest lifestyle, and we have the people and things we love. We're not destitute, we're not in a totalitarian state, and we have the freedom to enjoy our nonessentials.
